Size: Body 2.5in. Ant. 1.5in.
Very large beetle. Can't find it on the bug guide. Son doing a science assignment to take pictures of and give common names of various critters. Help appreciated.

Cottonwood borer.
This is an adult cottonwood borer, Plectrodera scalator, in the longhorned woodborer family Cerambycidae. Great find. Someday I will see one (sigh).

It's actually on a cottonwood tree. Does it pose a threat to the trees? They are pretty mature.
