It was on the path, but in the lowland area of the site, near the creek and good snail habitat.

Scaphinotus elevatus (Fabricius)
as illustrated and described in Lindroth; the broad, dilated prothorax with sides raised as "wings" is characteristic of the elevatus species group. Distinctive colouration and size identify this species. Widespread in eastern and central North America.

but we don't have one in the guide yet with a wide pronotum like yours.
