That's no good, darn wasps. I raise caterpillars so it's especially tragic as I probably would've taken that guy in the first time I saw him. It's rough out there I guess.

 
he was probably already "inhabited," though
The wasp larvae develop inside the caterpillar for quite a while before they make the cocoons outside it and pupate. This little guy was already doomed when the first picture was taken.

I love caterpillars too and am not a fan of their parasitoids, although others differ - okay, so this is how nature maintains its balance, but dangit, caterpillars have plenty of unnatural enemies now that there are chemical pesticides!
