polymorphism noun, adjective polymorphic - a condition where a single species displays several external forms and/or color variations. Usually this is the result of an underlying difference in genetic makeup. Also refers to the presence of multiple biochemical profiles (e.g., of the same gene) within the same species. In social insects, may also refer to castes.
