Bee FLy, red and black - Neodiplocampta

Bee FLy, red and black - Neodiplocampta
Los Angeles, Ballona Wetlands, California, USA
September 12, 2009
Size: 1/2 inch
This Bee Fly was found in sandy area with coastal scrub, Coyote Bush and Croton. I suppose Villa sp. of some kind? I haven't seen this one before.

This is a repost.

Moved from Bee Flies.

Move based on Andy Calderwood's ID here on this related image.

Bee Fly comparison
I've included this thumb for comparison. They seem to share the presence of the large dark pattern on the abdomen although more hidden on the thumb photo than the photo at the head of the post. Are these Bee Flies related or the same or not?

Neodiplocampta?
This is purely a guess based on similar appearance, but possibly one of the Neodiplocampta species? As an example:

I'm eager to hear what the experts have to say on this interestingly-patterned fly!

Good guess, I'd say.
That blotchy effect on the wings points to Neodiplocampata sp., but I'm no expert and have shot only a couple of these.

Not Villa...
Villa's have clear wings. This has spotted wings. However, I do not see this abdomen pattern on other spotted-wings Bee Flies posted. It may be immature so markings are not yet clear. Ron or Joel should be able to help id.

Spotted wings
Thank you Alice, I just posted another Bee Fly image (#335385) with spotted wings that was present with this Bee Fly nearby.
