you were right, Arlo: this must be Thanatophilus truncatus

Get a cooler
Arlo, to carry into the field. You really need dorsal shots that are not handheld. A chilled beetle is a good beetle!

looks like a Carrion Beetle
Family Silphidae, but I don't recognize it.
