Small shiny wasp - Evagetes

Small shiny wasp - Evagetes
Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
September 21, 2009
This wasp was in the same area as my previous entry. Slightly smaller and shinier. Although it looked totally black, certain areas of the abdomen seemed greenish in the sun. Movements were frenetic and closer approach seemed to make it fly away. Help with ID appreciated.

Neat.
Looks like a spider wasp (family Pompilidae) in the genus Evagetes. They are kleptoparasites of other spider wasps. The female lays her egg on the spider another wasp is carrying (or has already placed in the nest burrow). Very nice find if that is what it is (spider wasps are really tricky from images alone, but the short, thick antennae are typical of that genus).

Thanks Eric.
