Maybe
..a very pale, worn Perizoma - possibly P. curvilinea #7324 or P. costiguttata #7325?

Libby and Rick, are you sure? I thought this looked like but especially like Carol Wolf's on MPG.

I'm certain it's not Heterophleps refusaria.
Maps on both BG & MPG indicate that it doesn't occur on the west coast. Not listed in Powell & Opler either, although that isn't necessarily definitive. Apart from the dark marks along the costa, the configuration of the other lines isn't nearly as good a match as it is for Perizoma.

I don't have a California Lep list and there may be other species from CA that I'm not familiar with, but this sure looks a lot like the Perizomas we get in BC & Washington. I've seen them with both very strong and very pale markings. Unfortunately this one is pretty faded, but if I had to make a choice between P. curvilinea or costiguttata, I'd go for P. costiguttata. Check out these two from the west coast with more faded markings:

Thank you for your quick and thorough answer. Sorry to question you but I haven't seen the West Coast moths that you have.

Take a Gander
Through the Macaria moths. It's at least a good place to start :)
