Syrphidae - Eristalis stipator

Syrphidae - Eristalis stipator
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 22, 2009
Size: BL about 12 mm
We found this syrphid on Brittlebush in Borrego Palm Canyon. The very hairy thorax is pretty golden but reminiscent of a drone fly, Eristalis tenax. Eyes touch so probably a male? I wrote in my notes that the face is white and black, but I have no photo to show that.

Pretty sure this is Palpada, perhaps P. mexicana
Easily confused with Eristalis. I think the hair on the eyes is significant.

Palpada
Thanks for your help! Great if it is a Palpada--a brand new genus for me. I looked at the many Palpadas pictured in BugGuide so it's certainly not uncommon--and I found it in the right locale. Should I move it to Palpada?

I think you should put it at Palpada.
Likely, I'll move mine there. See also this one and the one it links to:

(BTW, I should mention that I'm not an expert.)

Palpada
It certainly looks like the Palpada that was identified with the large head and very furry thorax. Again, thanks for the ID.
