Sawfly Larvae - Cimbex americanus

Sawfly Larvae - Cimbex americanus
Montezuma, San Miguel County, New Mexico, USA
September 23, 2009
Size: large
Feeding on Salix exigua. Curled into tight ball when disturbed

Moved
Moved from Elm sawfly.

Just FYI
I see John has already ID'ed this, but thought I'd let you know this is a sawfly larva, not a caterpillar. The easiest way to tell is that sawfly larvae have 6 or more pairs of prolegs, and caterpillars never have that many.
