Robber fly nabs honey bee - Promachus hinei - female

Robber fly nabs honey bee - Promachus hinei - Female
Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
September 23, 2009
Size: 55 mm
Seems to me this big beast should be readily identifiable by those who know. The relative lengths of honey bee prey and fly give a good idea of the size of the fly.

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Not an expert...
...but it looks to me like Promachus hinei, based on "tiger striping" of the abdomen, reddish legs, and central U.S. occurrence.

Thanks, Ted.
And though Ted didn't mention it here, you all might want to see his blog entry on this fly here: http://beetlesinthebush.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/prey-bee-mine/.
