Found resting on grill cover. Must have fallen off from maple tree above the grill.

probably ready to pupate
When caterpillars are ready to pupate, many of them leave their foodplant and wander around looking for a safe place to build a cocoon. At this time of year, they can be found in all sorts of unlikely places - even crossing roads and climbing buildings.

Now that you've mentioned it, they are everywhere except on their foodplants (plus the leaves are falling).
