Red Bug, an Import - Scantius aegyptius

Red Bug, an Import - Scantius aegyptius
Incredible Edible Park, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
September 25, 2009
Many of these of different ages were around a light pole mid-morning and had decamped to surrounding foliage in the heat of the day (near triple digits) when I took this shot.

Originally spotted by eagle-eyed grandson Owen Matthew Hemberger, 4, while riding his wee bicycle. Guess it pays to look down at the pedals.

Now you see 'em...
...now you don't! Sounds similar to my experience with these guys... In the cooler parts of the day they are so numerous as to be very hard to miss, but as soon as temps start to peak they retreat to the shady underparts of plants or down into actual cracks and fissures in the earth itself.

Interesting. This is my first exposure to them.
From the name, I figured these were hot-weather dudes.
