Hyles lineata burrowing - Hyles lineata

Hyles lineata burrowing - Hyles lineata
Henderson Canyon Rd, Borrgeo Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
March 28, 2004
I had watched this very well-fed caterpillar crawling along the sand when, all of a sudden, it started thrashing around...curling left then right in quick jerky movements...and constructing this burrow. The clearly visible concentric piles of sand reflect its thrashing movements while excavating the burrow.
