Giant Swallowtail - Papilio cresphontes - male

Giant Swallowtail - Papilio cresphontes - Male
Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida, USA
August 1, 2009
Size: 4 inches
I found this beauty in my lemon tree. Later that afternoon she (?) was on the ground. There are a few leaves on the tree with tiny black dots. One leaf has white dots. I'm wondering if these are eggs from her or the Rustic Sphinx I found a month later.

shows pattern characteristics of the newly segregated
"species" - Papilio rumiko, particularly on the body and lower side. It seems that such specimens are common near the Gulf Coast eastward from Texas.

"she" is actually a he.

heres a giant swallowtail egg. watch the black and white dots they may be some fun and/or interesting critters too!
i think most sphinx eggs, in my experience are green and sorta oval till right before they hatch, then they change colors, you can see the babies inside. for a list of foodplants for rustic sphinx go here...http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/mrustrus.htm
it has a comprehensive list of them. sphinx eggs hatch in less than 2 weeks..
