Ichneumon wasp (Gelinae)? - Messatoporus discoidalis -

Size: About 0.7 cm long.

This stunning wasp was attracted to my backdoor light one night. It is my understanding that Ichneumon wasps are difficult to ID and there are so many different species of them. Could someone help me out with a genus/species or let me know if this is a Gelinae subfamily? I compared my pic with this one from BugGuide: http://bugguide.net/node/view/187983/bgimage

It is a wooded deciduous/coniferous lot with a nearby river. Thanks much.

Gelinae is correct…

The pentagonal areolet, depressed abdomen, an ovipositor about half the length of the abdomen, a sternaulus, and an epicnemial carina are all features of females in this subfamily.
