Skipper - Erynnis - male

Skipper - Erynnis - Male
Russian Ridge OSP, San Mateo County, California, USA
September 27, 2009
Size: ~ 2 cm BL?
Seems to be one of the sootywings or duskywings, but I can't find a perfect match in my local guide... Found in a burned area of grassland.

as for Frassing - your call
It does have a cute face. Anyway, there may be characters showing here that will identify it, that I just don't know yet. And it might turn out to be a useful photo to have, since face shots are rarely posted.

Is this the only view you got of this one?
I think it is Erynnis funeralis, but it could be E. tristis, and a view from the side or the top would help to better tell. The pattern is somewhat different on top, and E. tristis has white inside of the border on the hind wing (which I can't see in this photo).

I'll check -
but I don't think I have any other images. Thanks for taking on this challenging (for me) genus!

I re-checked -
I have four images of this skipper, but all are from this angle. Can be frassed if that would be best.
