Bald-faced Hornet - Dolichovespula maculata - female

Bald-faced Hornet - Dolichovespula maculata - Female
Forest City, Winnebago County, Iowa, USA
September 27, 2009
Size: close to 3/4 inch
While visiting my Grand Daughters I set out a small dish of sugar water to see what would come to feast. This good sized hornet showed around 3pm and continued to come back every 15 minutes or so. I'm just guessing it was the same hornet. I did not know this hornet was in this area, was quite surprised. Can you tell me M/F?
