Still a caterpillar actually.
Some type of slug caterpillar (family Limacodidae). My guess is the Crowned slug caterpillar (

Crowned-Slug Caterpillar
Outstanding! Thank you for the extremely quick ID on this fellow. I had gone back the next day to see if it was still there..and I'm now guessing, it being a caterpillar, it had already moved on.
Great to know a name now.
