Explanation of Names
Specific epithet in honor of German-born physician and amateur entomologist William G.
Dietz (1848-1932) of Hazelton, Pennsylvania, who collected some of the first specimens.

Records from the Eastern half of the United States and adjacent Canada, Oklahoma.

Food
Heinrich (1923) and Ferguson (1953) reared them on
common winterberry (
Ilex verticillata).

Eiseman (2014) reared them from leaf mines on
inkberry (
Ilex glabra).

Life Cycle
Larvae are initially leafminers and eventually abandon their mines and feed in shelters created by crumpling or tying the leaves (Eiseman, 2014).
