Tibicen winnemanna (aberration) - Neotibicen winnemanna - male

Tibicen winnemanna (aberration) - Neotibicen winnemanna - Male
Garner, Wake County, North Carolina, USA
September 5, 2009
Comparison of "aberrant" cicada with "normally pigmented" individual.

----------------------------------------------------------------

This cicada is a very interesting case (Amelanistic, Albinistic, Leucistic,...an ABERRATION!)

NOTE: Pruinosity (white wax - a trait of sclerotized adults, not tenerals!)

Although he appears "teneral", he is in fact fully sclerotized, pruinose and functionally an adult. Strangely, he is lacking most of the dark pigmentation. This cicada was collected approximately 20 feet up in the trees while calling (~7:00 pm EDT)!
