Harmonia axyridis

Harmonia axyridis
Toronto, Tommy Thompson Park, Ontario, Canada
September 24, 2005
Size: approx. 8mm
There were quite a few ladybirds [I live in England] sunning themselves right by the shore of lake Ontario. All except one were H. axyridis. It was the first time that I saw them.
See this picture which exemplifies their colour variation.

Hello, Maria, and welcome to BugGuide.
Yes, Harmonia axyridis is fast taking over in this part of the world! I was just working on the guide page today, and see they are becoming a concern in the UK too. See this website: Harlequin Ladybird Survey.
This is a nice shot and you can tag it and move it to the images page of the guide here if you would like to add to our data.

Harmonia axyridis invasion
Thanks Hannah for your comments. I was told that last year, or perhaps it was the year before, not sure, Toronto had an invasion of yellow soybean aphids followed closely by the Harmonia axyridis. Outside the Royal Ontario Museum in downtown Toronto one could fill up a jar in 5 minutes. However, right now, I've found them only by the lake.
Yes, there is great interest about this species in the UK, and in the continent too.

Harmonia axyridis succinea
Since I've been back in England, not only I've found that these Asian ladybirds had taken residence in our front garden, but that they seem to come in 3 colour variants. Whereas in North America I found only the H. axyridis succinea. See this page for the other variants, spectabilis and conspicua. Skimming through the posted pictures in the guide they seem to have been no postings so far. I wonder why?
