Enumclaw, Unincorporated King County, Washington, USA

Size: 23mm
It kinda seemed like it had a big head...I wonder what it likes to gnaw on. Anybody recognize it?

look,
staphs are one of these groups where more or less everything is a guess unless you've spent a lifetime doing nothing but messing with them bastards... i admire people who are into staphs big time. [am lucky to know a few, too... i mean, people :-]

This may sound stupid, but do rove beetles fly? I'm going through my backlog of photos and I came across one that I specifically remembered because it flew towards me while my back was turned and then landed right in front of me... and the photo I took was of a Rove Beetle just like the one I found here. Was I imagining things, or do they actually fly? (And I can post a photo of what I'm talking about if you'd like to see. It's eyes are really red, but it looks the same as the one above.)

Thanks, Jody!
Believe it or not, I'm still getting caught up with really old emails from 2010... so I just stumbled upon this one. Thank you for your reply! I had been really curious if rove beetles actually flew, so your comment was very much appreciated! Thanks!
