Cockroach egg case - Eurycotis floridana

Cockroach egg case - Eurycotis floridana
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
October 6, 2005
Size: 11 mm
Sad to say this was found on my kitchen floor - ewwww! Usually female roaches are careful to lay their egg cases in a safe place, apparently. This was stuck to the back of a piece of masking tape, so I can only think it got stuck there by accident. Identified as Blattara orientalis from the University of Nebraska's manual (see image), plus I have seen a couple of big shiny adults in my house in the middle of the night (one downside of having a newborn baby). A new species for the guide - but I'm not sure I can bring myself to raise these deliberately!

Nice
Very nice image!

Ootheca.
Thanks, Hannah, for sharing, especially considering the implications:-) Ha! I hope more folks will document ova and pupa as well as larvae and nymphs.

I'm reconsidering the ID on this
- I originally thought it was Blattaria orientalis, but since I've documented Florida Woods Cockroach in my house, and the ootheca is very similar, I think that's the more likely ID.

Fantastic picture
...and very ominous, somehow!
