Anna's Blue - Plebejus anna - male

Anna's Blue - Plebejus anna - Male
Gold Creek Pond (just E of Snoqualmie Pass on I-90), 2600 feet elevation, Kittitas County, Washington, USA
July 14, 2009
Same location as the Northern Blues posted previously; finally decided to give this one a try too. With its coloration and checked fringe, I'm guessing male Arrowhead Blue, but is it possible to be sure? Moister habitat than Butterflies through Binoculars West (1) has for the group. The flower appears to be Oxeye Daisy, Leucanthemum vulgare (based partly on other photos of the abundant flowers).

It's not an Arrowhead Blue,
the fringe would be much more strongly checkered with dark at the veins. It looks like what I would have called a Northern Blue as well; however, I see that the current treatment that we are following on BugGuide separates the Anna's Blue (Plebejus anna) as a distinct species. Those from Kittitas County are supposed to be Anna's Blue (that would include others identified as Northern Blues from this location).

When looking at just the upper side, there is always some margin of doubt about identification of these, but I think this is probably pretty sure. It is definitely a species of Plebejus.

Moved from ID Request.

This will probably get more attention in the Butterflies section than buried in ID Request. I really hope someone ID's this, it's a lovely insect.
