This cantharid has very cool notches in its pronotum ... which I failed to notice at first ("oh, it's just a cantharid") but Dave Kavanaugh pointed them out during the 2009 UCB ESPM 147 beetle & spider class. He got this identified to species. From Dave: "It's Silis carmelita Green. Guess the type locality? Carmel Valley! It appears not to be very widespread, actually known only from that general region as far as I can tell. It was described in 1966...not all that long ago."

There are 40 species of Silis in California, according to the SBMNH beetle site. The Silis species at the Essig museum all look the same to me. (S. carmelita is not at the museum, unless there are some in the unidentified Silis section.)

do you think he can look at my Silinae and at least confirm the genus I'm putting them in? I can send the cleaned up files
