Eupeodes maybe americanus? - Eupeodes fumipennis

Eupeodes maybe americanus? - Eupeodes fumipennis
1000 Palms Oasis, Riverside County, California, USA
April 24, 2008
Size: BL about 9-10 mm
This Eupeodes was found dead on a Stream Orchid at 1000 Palms Oasis. It looks almost exactly like a Syrphus americanus (now Eupeodes americanus) illustrated in Essig's Insects and Mites of Western North America, p. 568, included a fungus Empusa muscae, all the white stuff between the yellow bands. These spores also extend on the lateral margins of the abdomen, exactly as Essig states. I don't know how many other syphids look this this.

Eupeodes fumipennis
Thanks so much for getting this syrphid to species. It is much appreciated.

Moved from Eupeodes.

Front edge of yellow markings
Front edge of yellow markings too wavy for M.americanus, I think.
Maybe Metasyrphus fumipennis.
