Robber Fly? - Thereva bakeri - male

Robber Fly? - Thereva bakeri - Male
Walnut, Los Angeles County, California, USA
October 7, 2005
Size: 1/4"
Got a few pics before helping her(him) free from being entangled in a web. Brown Stripes on the body, furry looking, turns up at the end. Clear wings with stripes. Shiny brown under belly (I saw it when I helped him out of the web and he flipped around before flying off. (Asilidae - robber fly)

Moved
Moved from Thereva fucata.

late reply: Thereva bakeri Cole
That's my guess (the pictures are a little blurry). The turned up end allows me to say that it is a male.

Moved
Moved from Thereva.

Thereva fucata
I think this is Thereva fucata Loew, but Kevin Holston would be the best to verify this.

Fly
My guess is that it belongs to Family Rhagionidae - Snipe Flies. Possibly genus Rhagio.

Fly
I don't believe this is a robber. Unfortunately I can't tell what it is from these shots.

Stiletto fly
This one also looks like one of the western Therevidae http://bugguide.net/node/view/21486/bgimage - Chen
