35 spp. in our area, another 30 in Mesoamerica(2), many in the Old World; large genus with the greatest number of described species in North America(3)
Range
subcosmopolitan; most spp. occur from w. NA to Central America, just 4 spp. east of TX(3); one sp. (H. blandi) ranges into se. Canada(4) and 2 spp. into sw. Canada(2)
