Explanation of Names
Brunneria borealis Scudder 1896
Size
65-90 mm
Identification
Similar to Grass Mantid, but has distinctive fine serations along sides of thorax, is larger, and reproduces by parthenogenesis; males are unknown. Thick antennal base characterizes this species. Wings reduced--flightless.
Range
se US (NC-FL-TX) to Mexico
Habitat
Meadows with tall grass, especially Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)

Life Cycle
parthenogenetic; males unknown; juveniles escape through the point of egg case(2)
shape of ootheca distinctive, with a horn-like projection on one end
