Floating Fluff - no wait, it's Flying Fluff - Shivaphis celti

Floating Fluff - no wait, it's Flying Fluff - Shivaphis celti
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
October 8, 2009
Size: 1/8 inch
Walking along the edge of a meadow.
A few bits of fluff floating in the air.
Seemed to be seeds looking for new territory.

One just landed (?) on a leaf.
On closer look, its walking around on the leaf.
More on the underside of the leaf.

By naked eye, I see only fluff.
Camera sees some more.
Usually cannot see wings at rest.
This one is about to take off.

In the past I have seen dragonflies chase the fluff.
And I thought they were just chasing anything that moves.
Or maybe they were vegetarian dragonflies?
They knew more than I thought.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Looks good to me.

Shivaphis celti - Asian Woolly Hackberry Aphid?
Looks to be: Shivaphis celti - Asian Woolly Hackberry Aphid?

Looking at pictures here in BugGuide.

Several Hackberry Trees near by.
One always has leaves covered with a black sooty mold.

John

it's a Woolly Aphid
Entertaining post. :-)
Your woolly aphid looks a little more fancy than the one I found.

Thanks
I'll have to read some more and these.

And I'll have to try for a better picture.
Hard to get a really sharp picture of the little guys.
But they are pretty enough to try.
