Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi - male - female

Scudder's Short-winged Grasshopper - Melanoplus scudderi - Male Female
Power line right-of-way, Duke Forest, west of NC 751, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 1, 2004
Size: 18 mm (M) , 24 mm (F)
There were several of these short-winged Melanoplus in brushy vegetation in this old-field habitat. I believe them to be M. scudderi, or at least members of that species group--see guide page for indentification references.

Size measured by photographing adjacent to a scale (they were very cooperative), and is somewhat approximate, due to the contorted postures of the grasshoppers.
Image updated 9/1/20.
