Carphoborus? - Carphoborus carri

Carphoborus? - Carphoborus carri
~95 km NW of Peace River, Alberta, Canada
June 19, 2008
Size: 1.98 mm
I collected this beetle from a freshly downed trembling aspen log (undecayed) and it is giving me some trouble. I believe it is in the genus Carphoborus of the Hylesinini (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), but unfortunately these species are often found in pine and spruce hosts. The forest stand was deciduous dominated although the greater landscape does have white and black spruce stands (Boreal Mixedwood).

If there are any experts out there, I'd like to know whether this was a very confused conifer-associated species in my aspen bole, or if perhaps there are some hardwood species that I have overlooked.

Thanks,
Charlene
