Meniscus Midge - Dixella nova - male

Meniscus Midge - Dixella nova - Male
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
October 8, 2009
Size: ~7mm

Thanks John
It's the first Dixid identified to species for bugguide so far. I'll have to keep an eye out for more next year.

Thanks Stephen
It's a new family of flies for me. I just checked the UNH database, and the only Dixidae they list is Dixella clavata.

Dixella nova
This is a male Dixella nova. Dixella clavata is more brownish orange and has infuscated wing vein margins rather than a discernible spot at radial branching. Nice pic.

Dixidae
looks like. I glimpsed a very similar one last month before it flew away.
