Caterpillar - Pseudothyatira cymatophoroides

Caterpillar - Pseudothyatira cymatophoroides
Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
October 11, 2009
Found hitching a ride on a friend while hiking in a Carolinian forest. Mid-morning. Caterpillar immediately took to the defensive position while handling, and appeared to have emitted the clear fluid shown by its mandibles, along its back. Bright white spiracle.

Tufted Thyatirin
John and Jane, you got this one. The head pattern, the white spots on the side up front, and the hump at the rear end all fit.

Looks like it might be
Pseudothyatira cymatophoroides, Wagner pg 142. Tom Murray has seen many of these and knows it well. He may be able to confirm our suggestion.

Thanks
Very helpful! The habitat description matches the location where we were very well in the Wagner; a more Southern species here in Ontario I would think.
