Although it is probably incorrect, the common pronunciation among researchers is VEH-joe-vuss.
Synonyms and other taxonomic changes
A recent revision by Santillan-Gonzalez and Prendini used molecular and morphological data to redefine the subfamily Syntropinae. As a result of this and works by Soleglad, et al., the genus has been split into several genera, based loosely on previous species-groups. Currently, the genera in the US that were part of Vaejovis include Chihuahuanus, Kochius, Paravaejovis (Hoffmannius was synonymized), and Maaykuyak.
The Guide is being revised to reflect these changes, along with the onslaught of new species in the family Vaejovidae.
Numbers
See above. Previously 5 species groups with over 70 species. As defined current ly, at least 20 spp. in the US., with more being described.
Size
Adults range from 18 mm (V. vorhiesi) 70 mm (V. spinigerus) to 94 mm (V. intrepidus in Mexico).
Range
Mid-Appalachian states (see Vaejovis carolinianus guide page), and in the western US in W Texas, Colorado (likely), Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Throughout northern Mexico.
Habitat
Wide range of habitats from desert to high montane pine forests.
