Leafcutter Bee - Melissodes - male

Leafcutter Bee - Melissodes - Male
San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA
July 30, 2009
Size: 3/8" long
These guys loved our cosmos. They would constantly circle around the flowers and if one should stop to collect pollen, another bee would invariably dive bomb and knock him off the flower. At dusk they would settle down and sleep in the flower. A close up shows that they hang on with their sizeable mouthparts while asleep.
