Hummingbird or Snowberry Clearwing Moth? - Hemaris diffinis

Hummingbird or Snowberry Clearwing Moth? - Hemaris diffinis
Choctaw County, Oklahoma, USA
September 16, 2006

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Snowberry
Newly emerged judging by the amount of scaling still present in areas that are clear after first flight.

clearwings
I just got to see a hermaris diffinis' emerge and its first flight two hours later, and I can tell you, they loose scales on their first flight. When it took off it looked like a fine dust ball, and when it landed a nano second later the scales were gone. One wonders why they have scales at all?

Agreed
This is a Snowberry Clearwing.
