stable fly - Stomoxys calcitrans - Stomoxys calcitrans

stable fly - Stomoxys calcitrans - Stomoxys calcitrans
San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA
August 23, 2009
Size: 1/4 inch
This fly landed on the edge of the compost bin as I opened it. The bugs covering the fly had also infested the rotting fruit within the compost bin. I'm surprised this bug can even fly.

WOW! Great image!
I've never seen mites (in this quantity) on anything other than a beetle-host. Thanks for posting.

Oh, and for those who are having trouble telling if they are mites or not, the ones crawling on the surface below the fly are much easier to make out..

Fly
I'll have to take your word that the orange objects are mites and not a substance (like pollen) instead...the fly is a stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans. Great image.
