Hyppa contrasta

Hyppa contrasta
Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
July 6, 2009
NOt sure on species - possibly darker Hyppa contrasta 9579 or perhaps H. brunneicrista 9580. Seems to have more brown in median area of forewing than most photos of contrasta. Similar to CBIF photo of brunneicrista.

9579 - Hyppa contrasta
I got the following response from Don Lafontaine when I asked about the possibility of an undescribed species of Hyppa on Vancouver Island:

"The Vancouver Island form of Hyppa contrasta (and many other things too) look so different you would think - and I did at first - that they would be different species. However, the genitalia, antennae, DNA and intermediates all said otherwise."

By "intermediates" I think he means intermediate between the Vancouver Island population and other populations at some distance on the mainland. It is often the case that within the overall population of a species there are distinctive regional forms, with intermediate populations between the regional isolates showing a blending of regional characteristics. This is no different than the case of the "sky islands" in southern Arizona where populations of some Acontia species on each mountain range are somewhat different from each other, causing one to think there is more than one species involved.
