Right guess
This is indeed a superb female of the famous Cow Killer, Dasymutilla occidentalis.

thanks for the info. I though
thanks for the info. I thought that might have been the right species but what confused me was the markings on the abdomen. The one I photographed seemed to have disconnected spots while the rest in the guide had connected.
