Lethocerus sp.
There are several species in this Genus. A better image of the raptorial forelegs and/or underside may be needed for further id.
f.y.i. - L. (Benacus) griseus is the only US species lacking grooved femurs (accommodating the tibia). In griseus, replacing the grooves are soft velvety "friction-reducing" pads on the inner edges.

The stated size of 3 inches...
is incorrect. Overall body length should be measured rather than overall insect length. The outstretched legs shouldn't have been included in the measurement. Using Photoshop, I was able to orient the ruler to the same angle as the insect and determine that the length is 2 3/8" or 59mm.
