Oncocnemis semicollaris - Sympistis semicollaris

Oncocnemis semicollaris - Sympistis semicollaris
Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
July 4, 2009
Only seen once.

Looks like both John Davis's and Jeremy Tatum's photos of O. semicollaris 10133. However, also close to to O. figurata 10130, O. pallidior 10130.2 and O. greyi 10131.1 all of which are reported from BC.

Second photo blurred & will frass. Included temporarily because it's the only one I have which shows the head reasonably well & I gather from other comments on BG that it may help with ID.

Found article...
....on Oncocnemis species by Troubridge & Crabo in the Journal of the Entomological Society of BC #95, December 1998 P.33, "New Oncocnemis from the Pacific Northwest".

States that:

- Only four species of the Oncocnemis figurata group are found in the Pacific northwest: O. figurata, semicollaris, ragani & greyi. From key provided, only O. semicollaris has a gray head; others have a black head.

- O. ragani limited to SW Oregon; O. figurata widely distributed east of Cascades in Washington & Oregon; O. semicollaris found in vicinity of Gulf of Georgia & east of Cascades from south-central BC to central Oregon. O. greyi is new species; locations listed in article include south-central BC & Washington.

ID of our photos based on head colour & geographic location (ie proximity to Gulf of Georgia).
