Contacyphon variabilis (Thunberg 1787) is holarctic per(2); according to this source, Cyphon modestus (LeConte 1853), Cyphon nebulosus (LeConte 1853), and Cyphon punctatus (LeConte 1853) are all its synonyms.
However, Tetrault (1967) noted distinct genitalic differences and restored the following spp. to full species status: Cyphon nebulosus and Cyphon punctatus. (1)
