huge fleshy caterpillar - Pseudosphinx tetrio
sarasota, sarasota County, Florida, USA
October 22, 2009
Size: appox 6-7 inches
Found this crawling under a plumeria plant in west central florida (sarasota) can't find anything out on the internet. would love to know what it turns into.

I seen this caterpillar in the Domincin Republic

Giant Bat Moth
I'm told that the local name for this species on Nevis is "bat moth."

thank you for your speedy identification

Moved from ID Request.

This is the Tetrio Sphinx Moth caterpillar Pseudosphinx tetrio.

ah.. you beat me
I was fiddling around trying to get a good picture. :) Looks like we're on the same page.

The cropped version is much better...
...for getting an identification than the image initially posted. I understand you are trying to show the size related to your have but all I have to go by is my hand which is almost 9 inches long from palm to finger tip... I am guessing than yours is a little smaller... :)

This way, viewers can see more caterpillar and less background.

perfect! Tetrio Sphinx Moth, Pseudosphinx tetrio
I couldn't see the horn on the tail with the bigger image. Now I do, so sphinx moth. Here it is :)

very interesting
That's a neat looking caterpillar, and quite large. I don't know what it is, but I'm sure somebody on here will.
