After disturbing the little guy, the mandibles snapped back almost parallel to the sides of its head rather than snapping shut as if to bite.

owl fly larvae
I have keep these in leaf litter. From Oct. 25 to Dec. 4 they have increased in size from ~1.5 mm to ~5 mm.
