unknown katydid -
Turpilia rostrata
Davie, Broward County, Florida, USA

Looks a lot like the pics of Turpilia in the guide but I know zip about Orthoptera. Just testing out a new camera.

Moved from

. I have to concur with this ID. Would have been somewhat helpful to include an accurate size measurement.

I'm not replying directly to your comment, because that would make you unable to edit it. You can make that long address into a link by putting "Click Here" after it, making:
You can substitute just about any string of text for "Click Here" as long as it doesn't contain a left square bracket ("[")
Just click "edit" on your comment to make the change.
By the way- this isn't a Coneheaded Katydid, because it doesn't have a cone on its head:
Here's links to a few of our guide pages that might prove useful:
Family Tettigoniidae
Genus Neoconocephalus
Species
Turpilia rostrata
Subfamily Phaneropterinae

Turpilia rostrata
Definitely looks like a dead ringer for the pics of Turpilia rostrata in the guide but I can't find any web references with diagnostic characteristics. I'm willing to go with rostrata for my own purposes so should I frass?

Don't Frass
These are quite decent images, and If they are
Turpilia rostrata
, they represent only the third specimen posted on BugGuide.
As for references with diagnostic characteristics, the gold standard is
Singing Insects of North America
.
It looks to me like this keys to
Turpilia rostrata
, but I'm no expert.

Thanks!
yeah, I'm not very good with HTML. Thanks though. I was looking mainly at the shape of the wings. That is why I thought it was a coneheaded one. I thought that the head looked slightly cone-shaped. Oh well.

Cone-headed Grasshopper
I believe this is a cone-headed grasshopper (Neoconocephalus species). It is part of the family Tettigoniidae.
