Cicada - Possibly Tibicen tremulus or Tibicen dorsatus - Megatibicen tremulus

Cicada - Possibly Tibicen tremulus or Tibicen dorsatus - Megatibicen tremulus
Mo Ranch - north of Hunt Texas, Kerr County, Texas, USA
October 24, 2009
I have been hearing these cicada's calling in the Texas Hill Country. It is an intense continuous rattle (like a very angry rattlesnake) that is steday in volumn and frequency. When I netted this individual, its alarm sound was so intense that it literally hurt my ear drums and when it was released it continued to emit this alarm call even as it flew off and continued for about a minute.

This is Tibicen tremulus, the subcosta and costa are the same color. :-)

I would also like to add..
That the timbal cover color is black as described in Jeffery Cole's paper:
"A New Cryptic Species of Cicada Resembling Tibicen dorsatus
Revealed by Calling Song (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae"

In addition, looking at the distribution map for this new species (based on museum specimens and collecting trips by Jeffrey Cole) that you have just increased the range of this new species well into Texas by several hundred miles. I'm sure Jeff would be interested in knowing this.

I'll text him today, though he's kinda slammed with school. It's not in the Mescalero Dunes system so I doubt it's harenosus. Very cool record.
