Small dark wasp - Priocnemis cornica

Small dark wasp - Priocnemis cornica
Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA
October 25, 2009
Size: ~ 10 - 12 mm
I saw two of these at different times working the sand and vegetation along a river. They moved pretty quickly and were hard to photograph. I am guessing that they were sized somewhere just above 10mm.

Moved from Priocnemis.

The wings look uniformly dark...
so I would say this is an individual of Priocnemis cornica.

Nick, are you confident enoug
Nick, are you confident enough that I should move to that species? Thanks for the comment.

Yes I am...
you can move it to species level.

Moved from ID Request.

Nice shot!
Great to see images of species from Cincinnati (I lived there eleven years, 1988-1999). This is a detailed-enough shot that I can tell you it is a species of spider wasp (Pompilidae) in the genus Priocnemis. The stubby teeth along the edge of the hind tibia show up in this remarkable image. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Eric!
