Florida Metallic Tiger Beetle - Tetracha floridana - male

Florida Metallic Tiger Beetle - Tetracha floridana - Male
Seminole, Tara Cay Sound, Pinellas County, Florida, USA
October 20, 2009
Emerged in early October from a 3rd-instar larva (this and associated photographs) collected 3.viii.2009 from its burrow in higher ground adjacent a saltwater marsh along the intracoastal waterway. The larva was placed in a plastic one-quart tupperware container with a chunk of native soil and fed caterpillars until pupation. The adult can be identified as this species by its narrower apical markings that are not obviously expanded in front, the uniformly black to dark green elytra that lack any violet or coppery reflections in the anteriolateral regions, and the location of the larva in a coastal marsh along the Gulf Coast in southern Florida.
